Playing into the 106
th minute on a sweltering afternoon in Indianapolis, visiting Columbia was able to convert a penalty kick in the second overtime to take a 2-1 win over No. 11 Butler Monday at the Sellick Bowl.
The Lions' Kynan Rocks was fighting for position with a Butler defender inside the left edge of the box when the officials awarded a penalty kick. Francisco Agrest scored for the game-winner.
Butler falls to 1-2-1 on the young season, while Columbia improves to 1-1.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Butler took a 1-0 lead on
Derek Sutton's first career goal. His single touch off a short cross from
Brandon Guhl put the Bulldogs ahead. Butler applied most of the pressure in the early part of the second half after coming up empty on two quality scoring chances during the first 45 minutes.
Columbia tied the match in the 65
th minute as Nike Azuma played a ball to John Denis inside the box on the right side. Denis took a touch to sidestep a Butler defender and got the ball to his left foot to put the ball inside the left post.
As the heat contributed to heavy legs for both teams' back lines who had played a majority of the contest, each team was able to get several runs in the waning minutes of regulation but the keepers were up to the task.
Butler's
Gabriel Gjergji made five saves for the Bulldogs while his counterpart Dylan Castanheira registered four saves for Columbia.
Denis led Columbia with five shots as the Lions had a slim 17-14 advantage in attempts. Guhl took four shots for the Bulldogs, followed by freshman
Jack Haywood with three.
Butler had five corner kicks, while not allowing Columbia one on the afternoon. The visitors committed 22 fouls to just 12 for Butler.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, traveling West to UC-Santa Barbara. That match is set to begin at 10 p.m. (Eastern).
