The Bulldogs closed out a strong opening weekend at Kentucky and Illinois, posting solid performances across the board. The Jim Green Invitational and the Illini Open mark the first competition of 2019.
At the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Ky.,
Euan Makepeace picked up where he left off in 2018, taking first place in the 3,000 meters. The redshirt-junior finished in a time of 8:08.50, a full six seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Â
Junior
Josephine Thestrup and sophomore
Camille Hines also built on a successful 2018 cross country season, placing fourth and seventh, respectively, in the mile. Thestrup finished in 4:50.86 and Hines finished four seconds later in 4:54.06. Teammate
Mia Beckham had a strong collegiate debut in the mile, finishing third in her section in 5:07.56.
On the men's side, freshman
James Sweeney won his heat in his first collegiate mile, finishing in 4:22.37. Sophomore
Chandler McGaha also ran a lifetime best (1:54.53) for second in his 800 meter heat, which was good for 18
th overall. Teammate
Johnny Leverenz took 11
th overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.77.
At Illinois,
Allie Vogeler and
Jacob Uhl continued to impress, both taking first place in the 400 meters. Uhl finished in 50.88 while Vogeler ran the race in 57.45.
Three Bulldogs qualified for the men's 60-meter hurdle finals, with
Wade Walder,
Richard Clark, and
Garrett Kern making the cut. Walder took third overall in 8.46. Clark (8.62) and Kern (8.96) took sixth and seventh, respectively. The Butler women added two of their own to the 60-meter hurdle finals, with McKenzie Green and
Niki Ezeh both finishing in a time of 9.22. Ezeh finished fifth overall in a personal best time of 9.16. Greene took seventh in 9.69.
Sophomore
Lily Hess took third in the 200 meters, finishing in a time of 26.52. Teammate
Carson Fields also finished in the top 10, taking seventh in a time of 26.67. Junior
Clare McCabe posted a solid time in the 3,000 meters, finishing second with a time of 10:45.27. Rookie
Nick Robie took fourth in the mile, finishing in a time of 4:31.61.
The Bulldogs continue indoor competition next weekend, at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
