DAYTON, Ohio – Butler scored the first points of the game on Saturday afternoon at Dayton, but the Flyers would strike back with 31 unanswered to take a commanding 38-17 lead at the half. BU won the fourth quarter 14-3, but would ultimately fall on the road 51-38.
How It Happened
Nick Orlando and
Brad Sznajder helped Butler rush for 276 yards against a tough Dayton defense. Orlando scored five rushing touchdowns, with three of the five coming in the second half.
Butler won the battle on the ground, but the Dayton air attack was too much to overcome in this one. QB Jack Cook tossed four touchdowns to lead the Flyers to victory. Three of the four TD passes went to Ryan Skibinski. He led all receivers with 144 yards. His eight catches came on 12 targets.
Butler's top weapons on the outside were
Johnny O'Shea and
Nate Rusk. O'Shea caught five passes for 69 yards. Rusk caught a 49-yard bomb from
Sam Brown to help him end the game with 87 yards on four grabs.
Drew Bevelhimer connected on a 36-yard field goal on Butler's opening drive and the Bulldogs would force a punt after six plays on Dayton's first possession. The Butler defense had a hard time getting off the field after that stand with the Flyers scoring touchdowns on five of their next six possessions before the half.
Skibinski scored all three of his touchdowns in the first half and tight end Adam Trautman would find the end zone for another. The lone Dayton rushing touchdown in the first half was credited to Sean Prophit.
Butler's first half points came on a 41-yard TD rush by Orlando with 6:29 to play and a one-yard dive over the goal line from Orlando again with just five seconds on the game clock.
Orlando's third TD was a six-yard gain in the third quarter. His fourth quarter TD runs came from 11 and three yards away.
