The Bulldogs fell to Detroit Mercy Tuesday afternoon, 17-13. Despite a season-high five goals from
Ashley Guerra, Butler could not hold off a strong second half from the Titans. With the win, Detroit moves to 1-2. Butler falls to 0-2.
Detroit started the first half strong, jumping out to a three-goal lead before Guerra scored her first goal of the game seven minutes into the match.
Karina Latsko followed with a goal just 3 minutes later, assisted by
Lindsey Schreiber.
The Bulldogs continued to battle, cutting Detroit's lead to one yet again (5-4).
Holly Hall found the back of the net and Guerra tallied her second goal of the game to bring the Bulldogs within one.
The Titans used a 2-0 run to stretch the lead to 7-4, but the Bulldogs would not go quietly as Guerra and two goals from
Haley Hallenbeck would tie the game at 7-7, with five minutes to play in the first period. Butler and Detroit would trade goals until the halftime whistle, with Detroit holding the advantage at 10-9 going into the break. Latsko and Hallenbeck had Butler's final two goals of the half.
Detroit began the second half on a 3-0 run before the Bulldogs called timeout with 22 minutes to play. Out of the timeout, Guerra score her fourth goal of the game off an assist from
Sydney Pattison to trim the lead to 13-10.
The Titans would score another three goals before Guerra broke up the run with her fifth goal of the game, tying her career-high.
KK Callaghan scored her first goal in a Butler uniform with 11 minutes to play, cutting the Detroit lead to four (16-12). Each team would score one more goal before the final whistle, with
Ashley Steffes scoring Butler's with 25 seconds left in the game to make the final score 17-13.
Along with Guerra's five goals,
Haley Hallenbeck added three and
Karina Latsko scored two, moving her season total to five.
Sydney Pattison added two assists.
Amanda Rumsey made nine saves in the loss.
Morgan Girardi led the Titans, scoring four goals and adding an assist. Elise Harder added three goals and Lexie Kinmond notched two goals and four assists. Allison McDonough moves to 1-2 in goal for Detroit, making 11 saves.
The Bulldogs are back at home this weekend, hosting Kent State on Friday and Central Michigan on Sunday. Friday's match is set for a 3 p.m. start and first draw on Sunday is scheduled for Noon.
