Butler dropped a doubleheader to Georgetown Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. The teams will attempt to play the series finale Sunday, but the forecast looks questionable.
Georgetown held off a late Butler rally to take a 6-5 win in the first game before the Hoyas posted a 3-1 victory in the back half of the twinbill.
With Saturday's results, Butler is now 14-24 overall and 2-6 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown improves to 11-28 and 4-6 in conference action.
Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game, Butler put together a rally. A Georgetown error and a walk started the inning. Sophomore
Maddie Moore then followed with an RBI single. With one out,
Karli Ricketts drove in a pair of Bulldogs with a single to make it 6-5. Another single gave the Bulldogs runners on first and second with one out. Those runners advanced to second and third with two outs, but the Bulldogs were unable to push across the tying run.
Georgetown broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on only two hits. Cassie Henning's double to clear the bases was the key hit in the inning.
After Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Butler answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Maddie Moore tied it with an RBI single and
Kaitlin Doud put the Bulldogs ahead with a suicide squeeze bunt. Georgetown then answered with the five-spot in the sixth.
Alyssa Graves took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings. Graves struck out eight, while allowing five hits and five walks.
Katie Vannicola got the win for Georgetown, improving to 3-4 on the season.
In the second game, Ricketts took to the circle. She went the distance, allowing only five hits to the Hoyas. She struck out five, but took the loss.
Henning went to the circle for Georgetown in the second game, earning the win in the 3-1 victory. She also limited Butler to five hits.
Georgetown took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before Doud answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to pull the Bulldogs within, 2-1. It was her fifth long ball of the season.
The Hoyas added an insurance run in the sixth.
The teams are scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch in Sunday's series finale (which has been moved up from the originally-scheduled noon time). That game will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The forecast for Sunday could impact the start time. Check @ButlerSoftball on Twitter for updates.
