Ball State picked up a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon in Muncie, Ind., putting together a come-from-behind effort to improve to 31-16 on the season.
Cardinals pinch-hitter Amaia Daniel erased a 2-1 Butler lead with one out in the bottom of the sixth, sending a blast over the center field fence for a two-run home run. That 3-2 advantage would hold up for the host Bulldogs.
That Daniel hit was the last pitch of the day for Butler starter
Alyssa Graves, who had 10 strikeouts in her 5.1 innings of work. It marked her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of 2019. Graves took a hard-luck loss, allowing only two hits and the three runs (two earned). She walked six Cardinals.
The Bulldogs had eight hits on the day, including two each from
Lauren Fey and
Maddie Moore.
It was Moore who got the Bulldogs on the board first, finding the right-center gap for a double to score Fey from first in the top half of the first inning.
Ball State responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases and scoring on a bases-loaded walk before Graves struck out the side.
Freshman
Karli Ricketts put the Bulldogs ahead in the third inning, driving a one-out double to left center that scored pinch-runner
Emma Morton. That 2-1 Butler lead carried through until the sixth inning.
Ball State threw five pitchers in the midweek, non-conference contest. Alyssa Rothwell got the win in relief, pitching a perfect sixth. Aeshia Miles picked up the save after allowing back-to-back singles to open the seventh before Butler stranded runners on second and third to close the game.
With the result, Butler falls to 15-28 on the season.
The Bulldogs return to action this weekend, traveling to Providence for a three-game BIG EAST series.
