The Butler women's soccer team took the No. 15 ranked Wisconsin Badgers to overtime in Sunday's 2-1 loss. Â The Bulldogs and the Badgers both move to 3-1-0 on the season.
How It Happened:
After a mild ten minutes, the Bulldogs locked down to defend four shots from the Badgers in just four minutes, compared to Bulter's single attempt from
Morgan Kloosterman.
In the 23
rd minute,
Annika Schmidt found the net with help from
Katie Soderstrom to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The goal was Schmidt's second of the 2019 season.
Right before the half, in the 41
st minute, the Badgers netted the equalizer, putting the score at 1-1 going into the locker rooms.
Despite chances on both sides in the second period, the score would remain at 1-1 through the end of regulation, sending the match-up into overtime.
Five minutes in, the Badgers netted the golden goal in the 95
th minute to seal the win. Â This is Wisconsin's second consecutive OT victory, after a 1-0 decision over BIG EAST rival Marquette last week.
Stats So Far:
- Schmidt joins Soderstrom and Anja Savich as top scorers on the year with two goals apiece.
- After adding the only helper of the night, Soderstrom leads Butler with five assists.
- Stephanie Rodriguez grabbed eight saves in the contest compared to the Badgers' two.
Up Next:
The Bulldogs will host Michigan State on Thursday (September 5) at 7 PM at the Sellick Bowl.
Butler will then head back to Wisconsin to take on Milwaukee on Sunday, September 8. The Bulldogs will end their non-conference schedule with two home matches against Illinois (September 12) and Kent State (September 15) before traveling to Utah.
