INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's basketball team took an 80-65 loss to #14 DePaul on Sunday afternoon, moving their overall record to 12-6.
Kristen Spolyar and
Oumou Toure each recorded double-double performances in the setback.
Spolyar led all players with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Toure also pulled down 12 boards while supplying BU with 17 points.
Naira Caceres was the third Bulldog to reach double figures in the scoring column. She added 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Butler shot 54.5% from the field in the first quarter. They trailed DePaul by two after the opening 10 minutes 14-12. Full-court defense from DePaul created 11 Butler turnovers and the Blue Demons would come up with nine points off Bulldog miscues.
Butler continued to get the ball inside during the second quarter. 22 of their 30 first half points came in the paint.
Oumou Toure led Butler at the break with 10 points and four rebounds.
Kristen Spolyar was an impact player with nine points and six boards.
A 9-0 scoring run in the second quarter would help give DePaul a six-point lead at the half. The Blue Demons only shot 16.7 percent from 3-point range (3-18), but went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.
DePaul opened the third quarter on an 8-3 scoring run, causing Butler to call a timeout. They outscored Butler 25-11 during that stretch to take a 20-point lead into the fourth.
Butler fought to the final whistle. A 10-0 scoring run would cut the deficit down to 14, but the nationally-ranked Blue Demons would remain perfect in conference play with their seventh win against BIG EAST foes.
Butler will hit the road next weekend with games slated at Providence and Creighton. Each contest will stream on BEDN.
