LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Bulldogs are off to a 1-0 start to the 2020 season after posting a 4-2 victory against North Carolina A&T on Friday afternoon.
Connor Schultz tossed five innings to earn the win and the save would go to
Jack Pilcher.
Schultz struck out three in his debut and limited the Aggies to just one earned run off four hits. The run came in the bottom half of the third, to cut the BU lead in half.
Greg Gilbert would be the first Bulldog to touch the rubber in relief. He struck out three over two innings of work and kept North Carolina A&T off the scoreboard.
The final Bulldog to see the mound in the opener was closer
Jack Pilcher. The senior struck out the side in the eighth and opened the ninth with his fourth strikeout of the contest. Pilcher would then load the bases which led to an Aggie run, but the senior would close the door on any comeback attempt with his fifth strikeout of the game.
Offensively, Butler got extra base hits from
Brody McGrath and
Nick Ortega. Catcher
Duncan Hewitt was credited with the first RBI of the season as his single down the line in right scored Ortega. Butler's advantage moved to 2-0 after an Aggie error allowed
Andy Bennett to score.
Ortega would impact the game again in the fourth. He hit a two-out double to left that scored freshman
Jonah Wichman. Ortega's second RBI of the day would come in the sixth with a sac fly that scored
Brody McGrath.
Butler will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one will begin at 1 PM against George Mason. BU will then run it back with North Carolina A&T at 4 PM.
