Butler concluded its weekend in Florida with a pair of tight losses Sunday morning. The Bulldogs dropped an 8-7 result to Akron before falling to Presbyterian, 4-3, in 12 innings.
Despite the two losses, the Bulldogs still have an impressive 8-3 mark so far in 2020.
Butler got out to an early start against Akron, putting up five runs in the third inning. The big hit was
Loren Simpson's grand slam.
After the Zips cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth, Akron took the lead with a five-run sixth, highlighted by home runs by Macky Mitchiner and Kayla Wulf. That gave the Zips a 7-5 lead.
The Bulldogs would not go quietly as
Mackenzie Griman and
Christina Candotti hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning. That tied things up at 7-7, but Akron was able to push across a run in the top of the seventh that proved to be the game-winner.
Seven Bulldogs each had a hit in the contest. Griman got the start in the circle, allowing two runs over five innings of work. Akron did a majority of its damage after Griman gave way to the bullpen in the game.
In Sunday's final game, the Bulldogs had a flight to catch later in the afternoon, but had enough time to play 12 innings with Presbyterian.
The Blue Hose pushed across a single run in the third inning, but the Bulldogs were finally able to find the tying score in the top of the seventh with an
Alyssa Garcia RBI single.
Butler went ahead in the top of the seventh on a
Payton Longest RBI single, but Presbyterian was able to answer in the bottom half.
Despite placing a runner on second to begin every inning as part of the international tiebreaker, the teams traded zeroes until the 11
th when Simpson was able to score
Bri Avery. Once again the Blue Hose answered in the 11
th before winning it in the 12
th with a walk-off walk.
Karli Ricketts threw 194 pitches for Butler in going the distance. Jenna Greene pitched all 12 innings for Presbyterian. None of the four runs allowed by Ricketts were earned due to her throwing error scoring Presbyterian's run in the third and then runners being placed on second in the extra frames. Ricketts struck out 13.
The Bulldogs have a weekend off before returning to action Feb. 28-March 1 at the Liberty Softball Classic in Lynchburg, Va.
