Box Score
WESTFIELD – The Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the year with a 3-2 victory over Western Illinois Saturday afternoon at Grand Park.
Connor Schultz earned the win on the mound (2-0) and
Jack Pilcher would be credited with his third save of 2020.
Schultz gave up a one-out homer in the top of the second inning to Dorethy, but an RBI single down the left field line from
Brody McGrath would knot the score at 1-1 in the fourth.
Two more Bulldogs would cross home plate in the fifth.
Kollyn All cleared the bases with a single that scored
James Gargano and
Duncan Hewitt. All was responsible for two of Butler's five hits in the game. Hewitt went 1-for-2 on the day with two runs and a walk.
In the end, Schultz and the back end of the BU bullpen was too much to overcome. Schutlz lasted seven innings against the Leathernecks and struck out a season-best 12 batters.
Greg Gilbert tossed the eighth and Pilcher cleaned up in the ninth.
The game tightened up in the eighth as Western Illinois scored on a BU error. Yet another BU fielding error would signal the start of the ninth. The Leathernecks loaded the bases in the ninth, but Pilcher would get a big strikeout on Galassi and had Schwartz pop up to earn the save.
Butler and Western Illinois will return to Grand Park on Sunday for an 11 AM doubleheader. The games will be played on Field D3.
