ORLANDO – #14 UCF scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Butler on Friday night 2-1. The nationally-ranked Knights scored the in bottom of the first, and picked up their 13th win of the season with an unearned run in the seventh off a Butler miscue. With the setback, BU moves to 7-4 on the year.
UCF got an RBI from Josten in the first to score Pena and the game would stay at 1-0 until the fourth when Butler came up to bat.
Nick Ortega stayed hot from the plate with a double down the leftfield line that would score
Zach Jarosz. In the end, UCF scored the game-winning run off a BU throwing error in the seventh.
Connor Schultz and
Greg Gilbert combined to throw all eight innings for BU. Schultz left the hill with no decision after striking out five batters over six frames. Gilbert was hit with the loss even though he allowed just one hit over the final two innings.
The win went to left-hander Gordon while the save was credited to Hakanson.
Butler had one more hit than UCF in the series opener. Four of the six BU hits came from the top of the order. Ortega went 2-for-3 with the lone RBI. Gargano and Jarosz also recorded hits for BU.
These two teams will return to the diamond tomorrow for another 6 PM contest.
