Box Score Washington – The Butler volleyball team won a tight four-set match with Georgetown (19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 30-28) Friday night in Washington, D.C. A long fourth set clinched on a kill by
Amina Shackelford highlighted the match for the Bulldogs (8-8, 2-1 BIG EAST), who won their second straight conference contest.
Set 1: Georgetown 25-19
After the Hoyas got out to an early 8-4 lead, Butler responded with a 5-0 run, which included kills from
Melody Davidson and
Mariah Grunze, to take a one-point lead. A later 4-0 Georgetown run put the Hoyas up 19-14, but a Davidson kill followed by back-to-back scores from
Marissa McKelvey got the Bulldogs within two at 20-18. Georgetown immediately answered with a 4-0 run to help put the set away. Davidson led the Butler offense with five kills in the opening frame.
Set 2: Butler 25-23
The Bulldogs took 6 of 7 points midway through the set to build a 12-9 advantage. The run included kills from four different student-athletes and an ace by
Caroline Cleveland. Georgetown would get to within one a total of seven times the remainder of the set, but the Bulldogs would never surrender the lead, and they clinched it on an
Elana Brueggemann kill. Brueggemann, Davidson, Grunze and
Brittany Robinson all put down three kills as part of a balanced Butler offense in the second frame.
Set 3: Butler 25-23
Georgetown led 6-4 early before a 5-0 run on Cleveland's serve put the Bulldogs out in front. Cleveland served up two aces as part of the run. The Hoyas would quickly respond to regain the lead at 11-10, but a later Butler 4-0 run, including two Davidson kills, put the Bulldogs back up 18-16. Georgetown evened it up at 23-all, but kills by Robinson then Davidson clinched the set for Butler. Davidson (six kills) and
Megan Sheridan (four) put up solid offensive numbers in the third frame to help get the Bulldogs an advantage.
Set 4: Butler 30-28
After an early 3-1 Butler advantage, the Hoyas took the lead with a 5-0 run. The Bulldogs would tie it at 8-8 on an ace by
Jillian Ziemba, and later back-to-back aces from Robinson gave them a 19-17 lead. Georgetown responded to tie it up at 24-all, and the two teams went back-and-forth until a Davidson kill followed by one from Shackelford clinched the longest set of the season so far (total points) for the Bulldogs. Davidson, Robinson, Shackelford and Sheridan each contributed four kills for Butler in the fourth frame to help win the match.
