Villanova, Pa. – The Butler volleyball team lost in three sets to Villanova (12-25, 23-25, 25-27) Saturday night. The Bulldogs (8-9, 2-2 BIG EAST) return home next weekend with matches against St. John's and Seton Hall.
Set 1: Villanova 25-12
The Wildcats used a 12-0 run to build a 16-3 lead, and would cruise from there to win the opening frame.
Brittany Robinson had three kills and
Amina Shackelford had two kills in the first set for the Bulldogs.
Set 2: Villanova 25-23
Villanova got out to an early 5-0 lead, but a 3-0 Butler run later would cut the advantage to one at 7-6. The Wildcats steadily built their lead from there to as much as six points at 19-13. A late comeback effort with a 5-0 run on
Caroline Cleveland's serve got the Bulldogs within one at 24-23, but Kiera Booth clinched the set for Villanova with a kill.
Melody Davidson (five kills) and Robinson (four) led the Butler scoring in the second frame.
Set 3: Georgetown 27-25
Megan Sheridan's fourth kill in the early going tied the score at 6-6 for the Bulldogs. A later 3-0 run consisting of kills from Sheridan, Shackelford and
Mariah Grunze gave Butler a 13-10 advantage. The Wildcats took an 18-17 advantage after a 4-0 run, but the Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 run to lead 23-20 and eventually get to match point after a Robinson kill made the score 24-21. However, Villanova staved off three consecutive set points and won 6 of 7 points to clinch the set. Sheridan put down nine kills in the set, while Davidson added four for the Bulldogs.
