@ButlerVB Returns the Favor in Sweep of Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Butler volleyball team won three tight sets to sweep Seton Hall (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) Saturday night at Walsh Gymnasium. The Bulldogs (11-11, 5-4 BIG EAST) returned the favor to the Pirates (11-13, 3-7 BIG EAST) after losing to them at home earlier in October.

Set 1: Butler 25-23
After the Pirates got out to an 11-7 lead, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run on Brittany Robinson's serve to take a 14-11 advantage. Melody Davidson had three kills as part of the scoring streak. Butler steadily increased the lead to as much as seven at 22-15 on a Destiny Cherry kill, but Seton Hall rallied back to within one at 24-23 before a ball handling error on the Pirates allowed the Bulldogs to clinch the set. Davidson and Megan Sheridan led the Butler offense with four kills each in the opening frame.

Set 2: Butler 25-20
Mariah Grunze scored three consecutive points on a kill and back-to-back aces as part of a 5-0 run on her serve to give Butler an early 5-2 lead. Grunze later extended that lead to five on a kill for a 13-8 advantage. The Pirates would cut the deficit to one at 20-19, but two late kills by Davidson helped put the set away for the Bulldogs. Davidson, Robinson, Sheridan and Amina Shackelford put down three kills each during the second frame for a balanced Bulldog attack.

Set 3: Butler 25-23
The Bulldogs got out to an 11-7 advantage before a 3-0 run with kills from Davidson and Shackelford gave them a 15-11 lead. Seton Hall would rally back to tie the set at 19-19 and 20-20, but kills by Sheridan and Madison Friebel helped Butler regain the lead before clinching the set and match on a ball handling error by the Pirates. Davidson put down five kills in the final frame to lead the Bulldogs.
