SCOUTING DAYTON: The Flyers have lost two-straight PFL contests to move their overall record to 3-4. Valparaiso defeated Dayton last Saturday 45-28 and the Red Foxes went to Welcome Stadium the previous weekend to claim a 20-17 victory. Dayton is a dangerous team with league wins over Presbyterian and Drake. The offense posted 68 points in the PFL home opener and limited the Bulldogs to just 10 points in Des Moines. Jake Chisholm and Jack Cook are impact players in the Dayton huddle. Chisholm will take a bulk of the carries on Saturday, and Cook will attack BU through the air. On defense, Butler will need to keep an eye on All-PFL talent Brandon Easterling. He ranks third in the league and 30th in the FCS with 63 tackles.
Â
Jake Chisholm leads the PFL with 477 rushing yards. He averages 79.5 yards per game and went off for 144 yards in the win over Drake.
Â
LAST GAME VS. DAYTON: The Flyers handed Butler a 51-38 loss in 2019. Jake Chisholm rushed for a game-high 166 yards and Jack Cook passed for four touchdowns to lead Dayton to victory.
Nick Orlando led Butler with five rushing touchdowns, just one shy of tying the school record. He accumulated 158 rushing yards on just 16 carries to keep Butler in the ball game. Brandon Easterling highlighted the defensive side of the football with 16 tackles and an interception.
Devin Aguilar was the leader of the BU defense. He had a team-best nine tackles and forced a fumble.
Â
Dayton scored on six-straight possessions to build their first half lead. The two teams combined for 1,127 yards of total offense.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES: Dayton leads the all-time series over Butler 32-12-1. The first-ever meeting came back in 1925 with BU winning at home 10-7. Butler's last win in this series came at Dayton in 2013 (33-30).
Â
Butler won the PFL title in 2013 with a 7-1 conference record. The 'Dawgs had just lost to San Diego the weekend before traveling to Dayton where they held off the Flyers by three. Jon Treloar hit the game-winning 33-yard field goal with 3:29 left in the game.
Â
YOGI YARDS: WR
Yogi Flager needs 52 yards on Saturday to reach 1,000 in his young BU career. Flager recorded 387 yards during the spring season and has added a team-best 561 this year with five scores.
Â
Flager caught a season-high 10 passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns last weekend vs. Davidson.
Â
DEINHART LEADING THE 'DAWGS: AJ Deinhart has led Butler in rushing attempts over the last three games. During that stretch he is averaging 72 yards per game.
Â
Deinhart now leads the team with 62 carries and 366 yards. He is the only Bulldog running back on the roster to appear in all eight games this season.
Â
EYING 80: Head Coach
Jeff Voris has 79 wins at Butler. 2021 marks his 16th season on the sideline.
Â
Voris is 5-9 all-time against Dayton.
Â
STRONG SECONDARY: Butler ranks second in the PFL and 26th in the FCS in passing yards allowed (184.4). A member of the BU secondary has led the team in tackles five times over the team's eight games.
Â
Devin Aguilar has broken up a pass in four-straight games.
Â
BOUNCE BACK: QB
Bret Bushka missed the San Diego game with an injury and struggled in his return at Morehead State with just two completions. He bounced back nicely against Davidson, completing 65 percent of his passes and throwing multiple touchdowns in the same game for the first time since Sept. 18.
Â
Bushka passed for 166 yards, rushed for 46 yards and scored his first rushing TD of the season against the Wildcats.
Â
SPREAD IT OUT: Bushka completed passes to eight different Bulldogs vs. Davidson to help BU post their highest point total in PFL play.
Â
Bushka passed for nine first downs last week, marking the most for BU in PFL action.
Â
UP NEXT: The Butler bye week fell late in the season this year, so the 'Dawgs will have two weeks to prepare for Valparaiso. Senior day will fall on Saturday, Nov. 13. Kick-off is slated for noon.
Â
The Hoosier Helmet will be on the line when Valpo visits the Sellick Bowl. The Beacons have won four of the last five meetings, but Butler holds the advantage in the all-time series 51-29.
