INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team fell to Seton Hall (25-15, 25-21, 26-24) Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs (9-10, 3-3 BIG EAST) will stay home next weekend with matches against Villanova and Georgetown.
Set 1: Seton Hall 25-15
Kills by
Mariah Grunze and
Amina Shackelford put the Bulldogs up 2-0 early before Seton Hall responded with a 3-0 run. From there, the Pirates steadily increased their advantage to as much as 10 at 21-11 and at the final set score.
Brittany Robinson (four kills) and
Melody Davidson (three) led the Butler offense in the opening frame.
Set 2: Seton Hall 25-21
The Pirates again led by as many as 10 at 15-5, but the Bulldogs used a 7-0 run late in the set to get within striking distance at 22-20. Davidson provided five kills as part of the run on
Jillian Ziemba's serve. Seton Hall responded by taking 3 of the final 4 points to win the set. Davidson put down seven kills overall in the set for Butler.
Set 3: Seton Hall 26-24
The Bulldogs started strong with a 7-4 lead thanks to a 5-0 run where Davidson had three consecutive kills. Back-to-back Grunze kills later as part of a 3-0 spurt put Butler up 11-6. Seton Hall fought back to tie it at 13-all, and there were five more ties until the Pirates built a 24-21 lead. The Bulldogs wouldn't go out quietly though, spoiling three straight set points and tying the set at 24-24. The Pirates would clinch the set on a couple of Butler errors. Shackelford led Butler with five kills in the final frame.

Butler had zero aces a night after setting a season-high of 12 against St. John's.
