INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team fell in three sets to Marquette (25-14, 25-12, 25-17) Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs (14-15, 8-8 BIG EAST) dropped both matches in a week for the first time in the conference season with the loss to the Golden Eagles (23-4, 14-2).
Set 1: Marquette 25-14
After a team block by
Mariah Grunze and
Brittany Robinson to begin the set for the Bulldogs, Marquette went on a six-point run. Butler rallied back with a 3-0 streak, including kills from Grunze and
Megan Sheridan, to get within two at 12-10, but the Golden Eagles went on a 10-1 run to lead 22-11 and clinched the set on a block. Grunze led the Butler offense with three kills, while
Jaymeson Kinley contributed eight digs on the defensive end in the opening frame.
Set 2: Marquette 25-12
Destiny Cherry,
Melody Davidson and Grunze kills helped the Bulldogs lead 4-3 early. The Golden Eagles subsequently responded with a 9-1 run to gain the lead at 12-5 and later used a 5-0 run to go up 10 at 17-7. Marquette took the final four points to clinch the set. Kinley (six digs) and Grunze (five) helped out on defense for Butler in the second period.
Set 3: Marquette 25-17
With the Golden Eagles leading 6-2, Davidson went off for four kills and a solo block as part of a 7-1 Butler run to give the Bulldogs a 9-7 lead. Marquette responded by taking 14 of the next 18 points to reclaim the advantage at 21-13 and would go on to clinch the set and match on a Taylor Wolf kill. Davidson put down five kills in the set, and Kinley added nine digs in the final frame for the Bulldogs.
