PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Butler volleyball swept Providence (25-18, 25-23, 25-13) Friday night at Alumni Hall to also sweep the season series with the Friars (15-11, 3-10 BIG EAST). The Bulldogs (14-12, 8-5) used a balanced offensive effort to get the win and remain in fourth place in the conference standings.
Set 1: Butler 25-18
Kills by
Brittany Robinson and
Mariah Grunze helped the Bulldogs lead 4-1 early before the Friars responded with a 4-0 run. A later 7-1 Butler streak including kills from Grunze, Robinson,
Melody Davidson and
Amina Shackelford put the Bulldogs ahead 15-10 midway through the set. Butler would steadily build that lead to as much as seven and clinch the set on a Grunze kill. Robinson (five kills), Grunze (four) and Shackelford (four) led the Bulldog offense in the opening frame.
Set 2: Butler 25-23
The Bulldogs led 6-2 early following back-to-back kills by Robinson and Davidson. Providence rallied back to eventually lead 17-16 and 18-17 before Butler went on a 5-2 run for a 22-20 lead. Shackelford put down a kill to clinch the tight second set. Davidson and Shackelford contributed three kills each in the period.
Set 3: Butler 25-13
Two
Marissa McKelvey aces followed by Robinson and Sheridan kills helped the Bulldogs get out to a 5-0 lead. A later 4-0 streak highlighted by kills from Davidson and Shackelford extended the advantage to eight at 13-5, and Butler would cruise from there. Robinson and Sheridan had three kills each to pace the Bulldog offense in the final frame.
