INDIANAPOLISÂ -- Butler will travel to Wisconsin to play the Badgers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The first-round match-up will be played Friday night in Madison. Kick is scheduled for 6 p.m. (Central, 7 p.m. Eastern).Â
Â
This is the second NCAA at-large bid for Butler in program history and the third overall trip to the NCAA Tournament. Butler's first appearance came in 2015 when the Bulldogs defeated Providence 1-0 in the BIG EAST championship match to earn the conference's automatic bid. The second trip came two years later, in 2017, when Butler received its first at-large bid.
Â
The Bulldogs' 2021 tournament resume included a 15-4-1 overall record. It included an 11-match unbeaten streak that stretched from August 26 to October 3. All four of Butler's losses have been to teams with a current RPI of No. 11 or better (No. 5 Michigan, No. 10 Georgetown twice and No. 11 Xavier). Butler's RPI is currently No. 34 nationally.
Â
With a 7-2-1 league record, Butler finished third in the BIG EAST conference, which will be represented by five teams in the NCAA Tournament (Butler, Georgetown, Xavier, St. John's, Providence).
 Â
Wisconsin went 8-5-6 to rank No. 41 in the RPI. The Badgers finished 3-3-4 in the Big Ten Conference, losing to Rutgers, 0-1, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
Â
The Badgers have a 4-0 lead in the all-time series with Butler. The teams met in three successive seasons, 1993 (L, 0-4), 1994 (L, 0-1), and 1995 (L, 1-2). Most recently, in 2019, Wisconsin was ranked No. 15 and won in overtime, 2-1.
Â
Wisconsin will be the third Big Ten opponent the Bulldogs have faced in the NCAA Tournament. In 2015, Butler lost to Ohio State (1-2) in double-overtime. In 2017, the Bulldogs battled Northwestern through two overtime periods to a 0-0 draw, but the Wildcats advanced to round two on PKs, 3-2.
