Soderstrom’s Hat Trick Vaults @ButlerUWSoccer Over Dayton, 4-1

Butler women's soccer moved to 3-0 on the year after posting a 4-1 win over Dayton on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Grand Park. Katie Soderstrom recorded her first career hat trick in the win.

How It Happened:
Soderstrom, who led the Bulldogs in points and co-led in goals last season, hit her first score of the year in the 10th minute to give Butler a 1-0 edge. Fellow junior Morgan Kloosterman was credited with the assist.

Dayton would tie it up in the 25th minute with a goal from Itala Gemelli, but it was all Bulldogs after that.

Justina Gaynor put Butler back on top before the half off a helper from Alana Wood in the 28th minute. The score would ultimately be the game-winner.

In the second period, Soderstrom drilled two more goals (47th and 77th minutes), putting the game out of reach for the Flyers. Alli Leonard, Abby Isger, and Aliya Diagne grabbed assists on the final two Bulldog goals.

Bulldog Stats of Note:
  • Soderstrom nailed her first career hat trick along with her first goals of the 2021-20 season.
  • This is the second straight game in which a Bulldog has recorded a hat trick. Anja Savich scored three goals in the win against Marian on Wednesday.
  • J. Gaynor got her second goal of the season in the win.
  • The Bulldogs have scored at least four goals in all three wins this season.
  • Butler outshot Dayton 22-6 in the win, and held an 8-2 advantage in SOG.
  • The Bulldogs had a staggering 8-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Next Up:
Butler will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. for an exhibition with Bowling Green (Ohio) on Friday, Feb. 26th. The Bulldogs will then return to the Sellick Bowl to open BIG EAST play, hosting DePaul on Thursday, March 4.
