Visiting Notre Dame used a goal in the 35
th minute to take a 1-0 decision over Butler Saturday afternoon at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
With the result, Notre Dame improves to 6-4 on the season after playing nine matches in the fall. Butler falls to 0-4 this spring.
The Fighting Irish goal came as a cross was attempted to be cleared by the Butler defense. However the ball ended up at the foot of Matthew Radivojsa, who one-timed it into the lower right corner.
Butler's best chance came about 10 minutes into second half play as
Hemi Nasser's shot from inside the box was saved by Notre Dame keeper Keagan McLaughlin. The rebound made its way to
Jack Streberger, but his shot went wide right.
Those were two of Butler's 10 shots in the second half.
"I thought we came out in the second half with more energy, and I was really pleased with the opportunities we created over the last 45 minutes," said Butler coach
Paul Snape. "But we have to do that from the beginning to be successful against the quality competition we have faced. While we're disappointed in the 0-4 record, we've seen growth."
Despite Notre Dame owning a 6-1 shot advantage in the first half, Butler held an 11-8 edge for the match.
Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. had a game-high four shots.
Gabriel Gjergji made two saves for the Bulldogs; McLaughlin had three for Notre Dame.
The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to BIG EAST play as the conference has gone to a modified format for the spring 2021 season, dividing into Midwest and East Divisions. Butler will play home-and-home series with DePaul, Marquette, Xavier and Creighton. Up first is a Wednesday home match against DePaul. The match will be streamed live on the Butler Athletics YouTube page.
