@ButlerUWSoccer Stays Hot with 4-0 Win Over Xavier on Senior Day

The Bulldogs continued their winning streak with a 4-0 win against Xavier on Senior Day at the Sellick Bowl. The win moves Butler to 6-0 on the year with a 3-0 stance in conference, while Xavier drops to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST divisional play.

How It Happened:
Xavier held control of the ball for a majority of the first half, forcing Butler's defense to buckle down to make several clears.

In the 22nd minute, a trio of Xavier defenders were attempting to clear the ball out of the box on a Butler advance when Alli Leonard came up with the take-away. She made a few moves with the dribble and took a shot from the top of the box that curled into the bottom left corner of the goal, just past the extended reach of the Xavier goalie.

Up 1-0, Katie Soderstrom executed a second goal in the half just three minutes later off a set-up from Julia Leonard that was initiated by Justina Gaynor. Butler went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead and would continue to build in the second half.

In the 51st minute, Soderstrom took the ball up the sideline and into the box where it was poked away, but Anja Savich was there to follow up and shoot. Xavier's keeper got a hand on the ball, but the deflection wasn't enough to make the save and Butler went up 3-0.

Butler's final goal came in the 66th minute as Julia Leonard sent a lead pass to Gretchen Skoglund, who advanced the ball to Abby Isger coming down the pipe. Isger went one on one with Xavier's keeper, and sent a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal.

Despite 19 shots by the Musketeers, Butler completed the shutout with credit to Stephanie Rodriguez, who made six saves, five of which came in the second period.

Notable Stats:
  • Rodriguez grabbed her second clean sheet of the week and third of the season, bringing her to 12 career shutouts which ranks third all-time. She added six saves in the match.
  • Savich scored her seventh goal of the season, while Soderstrom and A. Leonard grabbed their fourth of the year.
  • Soderstrom tallied a three-point showing, adding an assist to her one score of the game.
  • Isger scored her first career goal as a Bulldog off J. Leonard's second assist of the day.
  • Xavier held a notable advantage in corners 8-0, and shots 19-7
  • Molly McLaughlin took a game-high seven shots in the match.
