@ButlerWLacrosse Heads to No. 22 Denver for a Pair of BIG EAST Games

The Bulldogs (0-1, 0-0) will hit the road for the first time this season as they will take on the Denver Pioneers (2-1, 0-0 on Friday and Sunday. Friday will be the start of BIG EAST play for both teams.
 
Bulldog Bits
 
  • Seven different Bulldogs scored in Butler's season opener loss to Robert Morris. KK Callaghan, Karina Latsko and Campbell Connors recorded two goals apiece.
  • Five different Bulldogs recorded assists, including Connors who led the team with three points.
  • Denver leads the all-time series 3-0. The teams last met in 2019, with the (then) #16 Pioneers coming away with a 16-5 win.
  • In 2020, Butler ranked No. 8 nationally across NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 8.29 goals per game.
  • Offensively, the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 97-58 last season.
  • The Bulldogs set six single-game team records and two single-game individual records in 2020.
  • Butler returns nine starters from the 2020 roster, including leading scorer Gabryelle Bodine, who tabbed 18 goals and 22 total points for the Bulldogs last spring.
  • The Bulldogs return three players who earned BIG EAST Weekly Awards last season in goalie Amanda Rumsey and attackers Kaley Attaway and Connors.
  • Three current Bulldogs, Ashley Guerra, Amanda Rumsey, and Katie McGrath, hold at least one individual career record in Butler's program history.
  • Guerra holds a total of five offensive individual career records. She also holds five single-season records and four single-game records.
 
Butler's First Game
Butler fell 16-10 their first game of the season on March 7 against Robert Morris. In that game seven different Bulldogs found the back of the net, while Campbell Connors, KK Callaghan, and Karina Latsko each scored twice. Five players also recorded their first assists of the season.
 
Amanda Rumsey and Katie McGrath split time between the posts against RMU, each made five saves.
 
Scouting the Pioneers
The Pioneers enter Friday's game at 2-1, coming off wins in their last two games against Arizona State and San Diego State, after dropping their season opener to Colorado. Denver was ranked #11 coming into the season by the IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll, and are currently ranked #22.
 
Molly Little was named BIG EAST defender of the week for Denver on Monday. This is her third BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. Before the season, Little was named to the Tewaarton Award Watch List for the second year in a row. This award honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the country.
 
The Pioneers lead the BIG EAST in assists per game and forced turnovers per game. Denver's Hannah Liddy leads the BIG EAST with eight assists this season.
 
Bulldogs vs. Pioneers
Friday will be the fourth matchup between Butler and Denver dating back to the Bulldog's first season in 2017, with the Pioneers leading the all-time series, 3-0. Denver has been ranked in the top-25 in all three meetings between the programs.
 
The most recent match-up came on April 13, 2019 in Denver. The (then) #16 Pioneers came away with a 16-5 victory. Current Bulldogs Elizabeth Davide and Layla Tattersfield each recorded a goal in the loss.
 
The BIG EAST Format
For BIG EAST play, women's lacrosse will play a Friday – Sunday schedule in which the teams will play their opponents twice in one weekend. The schedule spans seven weekends with two makeup weekends built in. The championship will be hosted by Georgetown, May 6 and May 8.
 
Up Next
Butler will host Connecticut for their first BIG EAST home weekend, starting with a 3 p.m. game on Friday, March 26 at Varsity Field. The Bulldogs and Huskies will close the weekend with a noon game on Sunday, March 28.
