CINCINNATI – The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a 3-1 loss at Xavier on Saturday night (18-25, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25). BU went 4-10 during the spring season with a 1-7 mark against conference opponents.
How it Happened
Xavier won the first two sets at the Cintas Center to take control of the action. BU battled back to win the third and avoid the sweep, but the action would end after four with Xavier edging BU 25-23.
Xavier doubled Butler up in the opener at 10-5. Butler got back within three at 17-14, but would not get any closer giving the Musketeers the 1-0 advantage. Butler led the way for a majority of set two, but the home team would come back to knot the score at 19-19. Xavier broke a 21-21 tie to score the final four points and take the 2-0 lead.
Butler got back at it in the third to earn a win. They led 7-3 early and would move along to take a 17-10 lead after a kill from
Amina Shackelford. BU took a timeout with a 20-16 lead and would score two-straight out of the stoppage. Davidson and Shackelford would get kills down the stretch and BU would win 25-17.
The fourth looked promising for BU as the 'Dawgs scored the first three points to build their lead. A 6-1 advantage would quickly disappear and Xavier would get momentum on their side with an 8-6 lead. The two teams came together at 10-10, but Xavier scored three-straight soon after. Butler called timeout and got a point off a service error, but the match would be decided on a four-point run moving the score to 17-11. Butler fought hard to the final serve and would get back within one point at 23-24, but the Musketeers called timeout and got a match-winning kill from Kelly Franxman.
