Butler will host Marquette at the Sellick Bowl on Wednesday as BIG EAST play continues during the spring season. The game is set to kick off at 2 p.m.
The match will be streamed live on the Butler Athletics YouTube channel as a student-run production in conjunction with the university's College of Communication.
BIG EAST play for the Bulldogs during the spring 2021 schedule includes a home-and-home series with the four Midwest opponents: DePaul, Xavier, Marquette, and Creighton.
In the team's last outing, the Bulldogs found their form as they were able to bring down DePaul 5-0 Wednesday at the Sellick Bowl. Sophomore Wilmer Cabrera Jr., who was also a Preseason ALL-BIGEAST selection, notched his first hat trick in a Butler uniform. Cabrera has assisted on or scored five of the Bulldogs' six goals this season. It's the first three-goal game for a Bulldog since Lewis Suddick netted a trio against IUPUI on Aug. 30, 2016.
Wednesday's performance was the most goals scored by Butler since a 6-0 win over Richmond during the 2012 season.
For his efforts Cabrera Jr. was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, his first BIG EAST weekly offensive honor of the season and the second of his Butler career.
Junior keeper Gabriel Gjergji led the Bulldogs to their first clean sheet of the season. Gjergji made two saves in the Bulldogs' commanding win.
After scoring only one goal in their first four non-conference games, the Bulldogs put all the pieces together and were able to make a statement in their last match.
This will be the 12th overall meeting between the two sides. Marquette comes to town with a slim advantage in the all-time series as Butler is 5-6 against Marquette all-time. The last meeting between the Bulldogs and the Golden Eagles was on Oct. 23, 2019, when Butler traveled to Milwaukee and the Golden Eagles posted a 3-2 decision. A majority of the two teams' contests have come since 2013 when the Bulldogs joined the BIG EAST.
Marquette is 4-1 on the season after winning their first three non-conference games. The Golden Eagles enter off a 3-1 win against DePaul Saturday. Marquette is 1-1 in BIG EAST play, which also includes an overtime loss to Creighton.
Butler was predicted to be the winner of the BIG EAST Midwest Division, which was voted on by the league's head coaches and announced last month. The Bulldogs had two players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in sophomore Wilmer Cabrera Jr. and senior Rhys Myers.
Cabrera was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2019, after scoring eight goals and starting in every game. Junior Jack Haywood was All-BIG EAST third-team in 2019 after tying for conference high in assists.
Up next for the Bulldogs is a Saturday match-up with Xavier. The game is set for the Sellick Bowl at 6 p.m.
