Butler Handles Huskies, Advances to BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship

The Butler women's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over the Connecticut Huskies in the BIG EAST Semifinal on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs advance to the conference title game against Georgetown on Sunday at 11 a.m.

How It Happened:
Butler warded off several Husky advances in the middle of the first half, including a few aggressive transitions that resulted in looks for UConn.

The Bulldogs picked up momentum shortly after that, as Katie Soderstrom's one-on-one opportunity in the box was thwarted at the last second by Husky defender. Payton Black also had a look at the net on a header chance off a corner kick, but Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Randi Palacios got a hand on the stop.

With five minutes to play, Aliya Diagne made a quick move at the midline, forwarding a pass on to Gretchen Skoglund, who shot a rocket from the 35-yard line, finding the top of the net over the reach of Palacios.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the 75th minute when Alana Wood struck a reflex shot off a corner-like free kick from Abigail Isger.

UConn came up with an answer in the 78th minute on a goal from Melina Couzis. Butler held down the fort in the last ten minutes of play to come up with the 2-1 win.

Bulldog Bits:
  • Butler advances to the BIG EAST Championship for the fourth time in program history
  • The semifinal win is Butler's fifth conference tournament win since joining the league in 2013
  • Skoglund's goal was her fifth of the year and first tally since February
  • Wood's first goal of the season served as the ultimate game-winner for Butler
  • Wood is the 15th Bulldog to record a goal this year
  • Diagne and Isger picked up assists in the win
  • The helper was Isger's fourth of the season, the second most on the team
  • Diagne, Caitlin O'Malley and Stephanie Rodriguez logged 90-minute games
  • Sunday's championship will be the third post-season tournament match-up between the Bulldogs and Hoyas
  • Butler and Georgetown have faced-off for the BIG EAST crown twice, in 2017 and 2018, with the Hoyas winning both contests.

Championship Outlook
Butler will meet Georgetown, for the first time this season and 11th time in program history, in Sunday's title game. The championship will kick-off at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on FS1.
