INDIANAPOLIS – Every Bulldog starter recorded a hit on Friday afternoon to lift BU to a 10-5 victory over visiting Villanova. Butler scored four runs over the first two innings and would take control of the action in the bottom of the fifth with a five-run inning.
Extra base hits came early and often for the home team to build a lead.
Dan Harwood doubled to right to score
James Gargano and another double from
Andy Bennett would move the game to 2-0. Butler capped off the bottom of the first with
Brody McGrath sending a sac fly to left, scoring
Freddie Matos.
In the second, Steinhart sent a ball down the line to double and score Jon Shoop. Shoop got the start in center today and would be a key contributor with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
Villanova would break up the 4-0 game in the third inning.
Jack Myers hit Ryan Toohers with the bases loaded to give the Wildcats their first run of the game. Nova scored again in the fourth off a wild pitch combined with a BU throwing error.
The biggest swing of the day for the visitor's came in the fifth inning. Jack O'Reilly cleared the bases with a double to left that got over the head of Gargano. The extra-base hit gave Nova a slim 5-4 advantage.
Myers was looking at the loss when he exited the mound, but quickly would be in line for the win in the bottom of the fifth.
Aaron Steinhart hit a ball off the scoreboard in right to tie the game at 5-5.
McGrath and Shoop each provided RBI singles in the inning and Matos would get involved with a double down the line to score each player. McGrath would single again in the sixth to wrap up the scoring and help BU get to the final score of 10-5.
Myers tossed five full innings for the win and
Nick Eaton was credited with the save for pitching effectively for the final four innings. Myers struck out five, but walked three and hit five Wildcats. Eaton kept Nova off the scoreboard and struck out six while not walking anyone.
Butler and Nova will return to Bulldog Park tomorrow for an 11 AM start.
