MUNCIE – Ball State recorded two wins against Butler on Saturday afternoon to reach their 15th win of the season. The Cardinals won 10-1 in game one and 16-10 in game two.
Game One
Ball State scored two runs in the third, two more in the fourth and erupted with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a win in the first game of the doubleheader. Butler made the game 4-1 in the fifth when
Nick Ortega doubled to score
Keenan Taylor, but the Cardinals took control of the action in the sixth after a home run from Powell.
Chayce McDermott threw four innings and was credited with the win. He struck out eight batters and did not allow a hit. Lukas Jaksich and Trennor O'Donnell also touched the rubber for BSU. All four BU hits came vs. Jaksich.
Connor Schultz was hit with the loss for Butler. He threw 5.2 innings and struck out seven.
Game Two
The nightcap was a wild one that featured Ball State scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh and six in the bottom of the eighth to come out on top.
Butler would lead early after a two-run home run from
Dan Harwood. The advantage didn't last long however as BSU countered with a four-run first inning. Harwood wasn't done. He returned to the dish in the third inning and delivered a single through the right side to score two runs and tie the game at 4-4.
Powell would homer again for Ball State in the third to break the tie. His solo shot to center came on a 1-0 count.
The Bulldogs got a double from Steinhart in the fifth to score a run and would lead 8-5 after the top of the sixth inning. The contest drastically changed in the seventh however as Ball State reclaimed their lead 10-8.
Fans in attendance got a show in the eighth inning.
Duncan Hewitt would knot the score at 10-10 with a two-run homer to left field. Scheffler would not be outdone however as he lifted the Cardinals to victory with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.
The loss went to
Jack Pilcher (0-2), while the win would be credited to Andre Orselli (2-0). BU used seven pitchers in game two while Ball State sent eight guys to the mound.
Butler will return to action next weekend for the start of BIG EAST action. Seton Hall will host BU on April 9 for game one of a four-game series. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
