DePaul closed out a weekend series at Butler, taking a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis.
The result gave the Blue Demons a three-game series sweep and improves the BIG EAST leaders to 13-1 in conference play and 22-9 overall. Butler is now 16-19-1 overall and 6-11-1 in BIG EAST games. The Bulldogs remain in contention for a BIG EAST Tournament berth entering the final weekend of the regular season. The conference's top four teams qualify for the tournament.
DePaul scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings, all on RBI singles.
Down 2-0, Butler was able to cut the lead in half in the fifth inning. With runners on first and third and two outs,
Bri Avery purposely got caught in a rundown, which allowed
Alyssa Garcia to steal home.
Natalie Halvorson and Krista Dalgarn combined to limit the Bulldogs to three hits. Halvorson went the first five innings and got the win (improving to 9-3). Dargarn pitched the final two frames, striking out four, to pick up the save.
For the Bulldogs,
Karli Ricketts and
Alyssa Graves split time in the circle. Ricketts allowed two runs in three innings; Graves allowed a single run over the final four innings.
DePaul had 11 hits on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs close the regular season with a three-game series against Creighton in Omaha. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, followed by a single game Sunday.
