Butler men's golf coach
Bill Mattingly has announced his retirement, effective at the end of May. Mattingly arrived at Butler in 2007 and coached both the men's and women's programs until 2019 when he handed over leadership of the women's program to Christie Cates.
"We are certainly going to miss Bill," said Butler Vice President/Director of Athletics Barry Collier. "His steady leadership of our golf program over the last 14 years has led to our student-athletes achieving success on and off the course. Bill's professionalism, strong character and outgoing disposition made every interaction genuine and enjoyable. We want to thank him for his many contributions to our university and we wish him and his family all the best."
Mattingly's last few official days leading the Butler men's golf program were spent alongside
Michael Cascino at the NCAA Regional in Noblesville, Ind. Cascino won the 2021 BIG EAST title in a playoff, becoming the first Butler men's golfer to win BIG EAST medalist honors while also earning an automatic berth in the regional field.
Mattingly also helped Lauren Tibbets to the 2017 BIG EAST women's title. In 2017, Butler's women posted a second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. On the men's side, the Bulldogs finished third in 2019, the program's best result since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.
"The highlight of my career has been the relationships that I have been able to develop and enjoy with my players, my friends at Butler, and everyone within this wonderful golf community," said Mattingly. "I will always be grateful to those players and their families who trusted me to help them reach their potential and I am proud to have played a role in their success. My wife, Maureen, and our family has supported me and my teams so much over the years, and I'm thankful for that support."
Since coming to Butler in 2007, Mattingly has helped the Butler golf programs win a total of 44 tournaments. The women's golf program made three trips to the NCAA Regional under his leadership. In 2013, Mattingly guided Butler's women's squad to a championship in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), the Bulldogs' only year in the conference. That followed back-to-back Horizon League championships in 2011 and 2012. Former Bulldog Michele Nash was twice named league player of the year and Jenna Peters earned BIG EAST Player of the Year honors after the completion of her senior season in 2014-15.
Butler's women's golf program is among just 62 teams that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year of the 15-year-old program. Team earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.
Mattingly has had dozens of his student-athletes receive academic accolades, including WGCA All-American Scholar and First wave Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars honors, as well as BIG EAST All-Academic Team and Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll recognition.
Mattingly, a life member of the Indiana Professional Golfers Association, coached at local high school powerhouse Cathedral for 18 years prior to taking over the Butler golf program.
A search for Butler's next men's golf head coach is underway.
