@ButlerVB Grabs 3-1 Win over UIC

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Butler volleyball team earned their first win of the season Saturday morning defeating UIC 3-1. Mariah Grunze and Madison Friebel each recorded double doubles for the second consecutive match in the Top Dawg Challenge.

Set 1
The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the first set with a Mariah Grunze kill. Grunze scored two of the first three points for the Bulldogs as BU jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead. After a back and forth affair early on, BU went on a 5-0 run to take a commanding 17-10 lead. A Melody Davidson block assist, followed by a kill on the next play gave the Bulldogs a 22-15 lead, forcing an UIC timeout.

Following the timeout, Butler scored twice to reach set point. UIC made one final rally to cut the game to a six point lead, but a UIC service error would give BU the 25-19 set one win. Grunze led the first set for Butler with five kills. Madison Friebel continued to find her resulting 13 assists.

Set 2
Tied at 3-3 to begin the second set, a 6-0 BU run gave the Dawgs an early 9-3 advantage. UIC rallied back after a timeout to tie the game up at 14-14. A Martina Delucci kill claimed the lead for UIC for the first time in the second set. UIC led 20-18 late before BU rallied back to tie the set at 20-20 with a Melody Davidson kill. A consecutive kill by Davidson reclaimed the lead for good, as the Dawgs took set two 25-22. Megan Sheridan and Mariah Grunze added five kills each in set two and Madison Friebel recorded another 14 assists.

Set 3
UIC opened set three with an 8-4 lead, but back-to-back kills from Megan Sheridan and Marisa Guisti trimmed the UIC lead to two points. UIC pulled away once again taking a 17-12 lead. A Marisa Guisti kill followed by an ace from Hannah Kelly kept the Dawgs within three points, but the Bulldogs would get no closer. UIC's Martina Deluccihi recorded the final two kills of the game and UIC closed out set three, 25-17.  UIC's Martina Delucchi earned five kills and two digs in the set, while Paolo Santiago added four kills and two digs in the set.

Set 4
The Bulldogs scored three-straight points to take an early 8-5 lead in set four. A pair of UIC attack errors, back-to-back Melody Davidson kills, and a kill by Marisa Guisti gave the Dawgs a 13-7 lead midway through the set. BU was the first to 20 points in set four as the Dawgs led 20-14, however a 6-3 UIC run cut the Dawgs lead in half to 23-21. A Davidson kill to end a long rally, energized the home bench and crowd setting up the match point.  Mariah Grunze would earn the final kill of the game as the Dawgs took set four, 25-22 and the match, 3-1. With the victory, BU evened their record to 1-1 on the season.
