@ButlerUWSoccer Downs Illinois for Second Consecutive Win Over Big Ten Opponent

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Butler women's soccer team secured a 3-1 defeat over the University of Illinois on a hot Sunday afternoon. The visiting Bulldogs (2-1-0) scored first and led throughout, as the Illini (2-2) were able to score only one goal, midway through the second period.
 

Scoring Summary

In the 40th minute, the Bulldogs earned a corner kick. Becky Dean sent a ball directly in front of the goal, into a small crowd, where Gabby Smith was able to get a touch and put Butler up, 1-0.

In the 56th minute, Abigail Isger sent a ball across the front of the Illini goal. Katie Soderstrom was able to one-touch a low ball past the Illinois keeper, building a 2-0 lead.

In the 62nd minute, an Illinois shot was deflected by keeper Emma Martin. Illini forward Kendra Pasquale was able to knock it in to pull Illinois to within one, 2-1.

In the 76th minute, Abigail Isger collected a ball from Katie Soderstrom at the goal line, to the right of the Illinois goal, and sent a diagonal across to Alli Leonard. Leonard was able to send a hard shot into the upper left corner to put Butler back in control, 3-1.
 

Bulldog Bits

·       Gabby Smith scored her second career goal and Becky Dean tallied her first career assist.

·       Katie Soderstrom scored her third goal of the season and recorded her first assist.

·       Abigail Isger has scored three assists and one goal in the past two matches, both against Big Ten opponents.

·       Alli Leonard scored her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

·       In her second career start, Bulldogs keeper Emma Martin came up with five saves.

Up Next

On Thursday, September 2, Butler will host IUPUI with a 7 PM kickoff. Then, on Sunday, September 5, at 1 PM, the Bulldogs will host the University of Utah. Both matches will be held in the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.
