Full Notes

The Butler men's soccer team will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, on Tuesday evening to take on the second-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The match will take place at Bill Armstrong Stadium on the Indiana campus, with kickoff scheduled for 8 PM.

The Bulldogs are coming off a season-opening, 0-0, draw with Oakland, a match which extended from regulation through two overtime periods. Goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergji guided a defense that allowed only 8 shots through 110 minutes of play, and Butler played the final 9 minutes of regulation plus the two extra periods one man down. Gjergji saved the only shot on goal to preserve the draw and the 12th shutout of his career.

Indiana returns several players from a team that finished runner-up in the NCAA National Championship this past spring, including returning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Victor Bezerra who had 12 goals and 28 points last season. Also back are Ryan Wittenbrink (five goals, 12 points), Herbert Endeley (four goals and 10 points), Maouloune Goumballe (two goals, six points) and Joe Schmidt (two goals, six points).

Butler has recently had mixed results facing Indiana when the Hoosiers are ranked in the top-5 nationally. In 2017, when Indiana was No. 1, the teams battled to a 0-0 draw. In 2018, the second-ranked Hoosiers won, 3-0. Most recently, in 2019, Butler defeated No. 5 Indiana, 2-1.
