Both the Butler women and men cruised to team titles at the IUPUI Jaguar Classic Friday afternoon at the Northview Church course in Carmel, Ind.
It was Butler's second consecutive weekend competing on the Northview course, which will also host the BIG EAST Championships later this fall.
Mia Beckham pulled away from teammate
Angelina Ellis over the final 300 meters, claiming the women's individual title in 20:59.6. Ellis was just behind her, covering the 6k course in 21:02.4. That duo was joined in the front pack by teammate
Maddie McLain for much of the race. McLain finished third in a time of 21:09.0.
Kami Hankins finished fifth overall and fourth in the team competition (21:28.6).
Margo Hornocker, who also ran a week ago at Northview, was Butler's fifth scorer Friday. She finished eighth in the team standings at 22:11.6. The next runner across the line was
Camille Hines (22:22.2), who was followed by two Butler freshmen running unattached in
Elsa Rusthoven and
Ashley Learn.
Butler's team score of 18 gave the Bulldogs a significant advantage over second-place Milwaukee (64) and the host Jaguars (94). There were six teams and 62 runners in the field.
Jesse Hamlin won the men's 8k race in a time of 24:21.3. His training has been limited recently with a nagging injury, but it didn't show Friday as he led the lead pack of Bulldogs for the opening 7k before pulling away from his teammates over the closing stretch.
Butler had five of the top six finishers on the men's side, just missing out on a perfect team score.
Jack McMahon (24:26.8),
Evan Byrne (24:28.1) and
Will Minnette (24:42.4) followed Hamlin across the line, while
Ryan Adkins (24:53.6) was sixth.
The meet featured six teams with IUPUI finishing second with a team score of 49, far off the pace of Butler's 16. Milwaukee was third with 94 points.
Another five Bulldogs were among the Top 20 performers in the 78-runner field. That group was led by
Max Lauerman and
Nate Lantz in 13
th and 14
th, respectively.
The Bulldogs are now off from competition until the Joe Piane Invitational Oct. 1. The meet, which will feature a national field, is hosted by Notre Dame.
