Berkeley, Calif. – The Butler women's volleyball team beat Cal in four sets (25-23, 16-25, 25-16, 25-23) to conclude the Cal Tournament with a 2-1 record. The Bulldogs (5-4) rallied from a six-point deficit late in the fourth set to clinch the match.
Set 1: Butler 25-23
The Bulldogs quickly got out to a 7-2 lead thanks to three early kills from
Melody Davidson. They methodically built the lead to seven at 15-8. Cal responded, however, with an 8-0 run to take a 21-20 lead. Butler quickly regained momentum with kills from Davidson and
Grace Boggess to hang on to win the set. Davidson led the Bulldogs with six kills in the opening frame.
Set 2: Cal 25-16
The early portion of the second set was tight until the Golden Bears rattled off a 5-0 run to take control 20-13. Boggess, Davidson,
Mariah Grunze and
Brittany Robinson put down two kills each for Butler's offense.
Set 3: Butler 25-16
Cal continued its momentum from the previous set in starting off with a 10-7 lead. Butler responded by taking 7-of-8 points from there including an ace from Boggess to go up 14-11. The Bulldogs would extend the lead and clinch the set with a 5-0 run where three different student-athletes put down kills. Grunze led the Butler attack with four kills in the third set.
Set 4: Butler 25-23
Butler trailed much of the early portion of the set, but started a methodical comeback after falling behind 17-11.
Amina Shackelford accounted for three straight Butler points on kills to get the team to within two at 22-20. From there, Davidson took over with three kills during the Bulldogs' 5-0 run to conclude the set and match. Davidson (six kills), Grunze (five) and Shackelford (five) proved to be a potent trio to help Butler complete the comeback during the fifth set.
Stat of the Match:
Davidson dominated with 16 kills on a .448 hitting percentage, two solo blocks and three block assists for 19.5 points.
Inside the Box Score:
-Grunze accumulated a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs and added an ace, an assist and a solo block.
-Shackelford contributed 13.5 points on 10 kills, one solo block and five block assists.
