The Bulldogs opened the season with strong runs at the Butler Twilight. Friday night's race was held at the Northview Church course in Carmel, Ind., which will also host the 2021 BIG EAST Championships later this fall.
Head coach
Matt Roe held out some of his top runners on both squads as the Bulldogs continue to focus on their training for the upcoming season.
Butler's women took the Twilight title with
Corinna Pena leading the Bulldogs with a second-place finish (17:23.9).
Pena was joined in the Top 10 of the team event by four teammates in
Emily Royston (fourth, 17:35.8),
Camille Hines (seventh, 17:59.6),
Abby Olson (ninth, 18:07.8), and
Margo Hornocker (tenth, 18:18.4).
Even more impressive for the Bulldogs was that four freshmen, running unattached to preserve the possibility of redshirting, were in the Top 16 overall.
Quinn Shanahan ran a strong 17:26.0 to place third overall.
Laure Bertrand was sixth in a time of 17:42.3.
Elsa Rusthoven (18:15.3) and
Ashley Learn (18:23.1) joined them near the top of the chart.
Butler's team score of 32 provided a solid cushion over second-place Ball State (62). Cincinnati (67), Xavier (94), the University of Indianapolis (119), IUPUI (128), and DePaul (189) rounded out the team standings.
Xavier's Rachel Butler won the 5k event in a time of 17:19.8.
The Bulldogs held three of their top four finishers from the spring's BIG EAST Championships out of the event.
On the men's side, Roe was even more conservative with his line-up as only two of his 10 from the spring's BIG EAST Championships group ran in the event.
One of those competitors was
Clark Otte, who took second Friday night in a time of 17:49.1. Otte won the most recent Butler Twilight in 2019.
Otte was joined near the front of the pack by teammate
James Sweeney, who finished third in a time of 18:04.6.
Cincinnati All-American Alec Sandusky won the 6k race in a time of 17:42.0. The Bearcats had four of the top six finishers, taking the team title.
Butler was second with a team score of 46, trailing Cincinnati's 25. IUPUI (68), DePaul (104), the University of Indianapolis (146), and Xavier (154) rounded out the field.
Ryan Adkins was the third Bulldog across the line; he was 11
th in a time of 18:25.1.
Chandler McGaha (13
th, 18:29.6) and
Nate Lantz (17
th, 18:34.9) were the other two Bulldogs who scored for the team Friday night.
The next Bulldog finisher was freshman Eduoard Morin-Luzuy, who was running unattached to preserve the possibility of a redshirt. He was 21
st overall in a time of 18:41.2.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the IUPUI Jaguar Classic in exactly one week. That meet will also be held on the Northview Church course in Carmel.
