Mount Pleasant, Mich. - The
Butler women's volleyball team won a five-set thriller over North Dakota to conclude the Chippewa Invitational with a 2-1 record. The Bulldogs (3-3) made comebacks after losing the first and third sets before taking control for most of the tiebreaking set over North Dakota (1-5).
Set 1: North Dakota 25-21
The Bulldogs got out to an early 9-4 lead before North Dakota answered with a 5-0 run to tie it. The two teams then went back-and-forth until the Fighting Hawks went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-15 lead which they would hold for the remainder of the set. Butler had multiple kills from Grace Boggess, Melody Davidson, Mariah Grunze and Amina Shackelford in the opening frame.
Set 2: Butler 25-22
Two kills each from Boggess and Shackelford helped Butler lead 10-8 early. A later 4-0 run by North Dakota put the Fighting Hawks up 13-12. The Bulldogs responded by winning 6 of 7 points later in the set for a 22-17 lead and cruised from there. Boggess, Davidson, Brittany Robinson and Shackelford posted multiple kills in the set to lead the way for Butler.
Set 3: North Dakota 25-19
Butler started the set with a 3-0 run with kills from Davidson and Grunze, but the Fighting Hawks responded by taking 7 of 8 points later for a 14-9 lead. The Bulldogs would get no closer than two points from North Dakota's lead the rest of the way, but Davidson put up a nice effort with five kills in the set.
Set 4: Butler 25-22
North Dakota took a 9-6 lead early before the Bulldogs got four points in a row punctuated by back-to-back kills by Boggess. Later, Butler secured 6 of 7 points with the help of three kills from Robinson for an 18-14 lead. The Fighting Hawks rallied go ahead 21-20, but two kills late by Grunze including the set clincher helped the Bulldogs prevail.
Set 5: Butler 15-12
A balanced attack highlighted by two kills from Shackelford allowed the Bulldogs to get out to a 9-6 lead. North Dakota would rally to take an 11-10 lead, but consecutive kills by Robinson, Davidson and Shackelford put Butler up and clinched the match on a couple of errors by the Fighting Hawks. Davidson, Grunze and Shackelford all were clutch with multiple points in the tiebreaking set.
