The Bulldogs opened up the BIG EAST portion of their home schedule with a 3-1 win over Georgetown Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Butler won the match by a score of 25-16, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17.
With the result, Butler is now 8-9 (2-3 BIG EAST) on the season, while Georgetown falls to 4-13 and 2-4 in BIG EAST play.
STAT OF THE MATCH: The Bulldogs had a 9-0 advantage in service aces over the Hoyas Friday night.
SET 1: Butler 25-16
Georgetown was able to cut into much of an early Butler six-point edge to pull within a single point at 13-12. The Bulldogs would take the next eight points for a 21-12 advantage. That spurt included three service aces from freshman
Brooklyne Darby. Five Bulldogs registered multiple kills in the opening frame.
SET 2: Butler 25-21
An 8-0 Butler run turned a 4-4 tie into a 12-4 lead, and the Bulldogs were able to keep the visitors at arm's length the rest of the game, taking a 25-21 decision.
Destiny Cherry had four kills in the set, including one on game point. Butler had five blocks in taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.
SET 3: Georgetown 25-17
After hitting .081 and .062, respectively, in the match's first two sets, the Hoyas swung at a .324 clip in the third set. While Georgetown had zero attack errors, the Bulldogs had 10 in the set. Giselle Williams had five kills for the Hoyas.
SET 4: Butler 25-17
An 11-1 Butler run turned a 13-9 deficit into a commanding 20-14 lead late in the fourth set.
Amina Shackelford posted six kills in the frame for the Bulldogs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Butler libero Jaymeson Kinley had a familiar face on the opposing bench as her sister, Keyton, is in her first season as an assistant coach for Georgetown.
- Amina Shackelford led the Bulldogs with 14 kills.
- Cherry had a career-best 10 kills in the match; her previous high was six on several occasions.
- Darby and Maddie Renn each had three services aces; that was a new career-high for Darby and one shy of Renn's previous best.
- On the heels of her 42-dig performance Sunday at Xavier, Kinley had 29 digs against Georgetown.
- Setter Cora Taylor had 35 assists and a career-high 19 digs to post a double-double; Mariah Grunze narrowly missed one with nine kills alongside her 15 digs.
- Each team had 10 blocks; Shackelford and Cherry were each part of five blocks.
- Williams led Georgetown with 11 kills.
