INDIANAPOLIS – The St. Thomas Tommies defeated the Butler Bulldogs 27-13 on Saturday afternoon to signal the end the 2022 season. With the victory, St. Thomas wins the regular season PFL title. The Bulldogs end the year with a 7-4 record that includes a 5-3 mark against league foes.
St. Thomas led Butler 14-0 after the first quarter and that score would hold until halftime. The Tommies scored on the opening drive, using 13 plays to travel 73 yards before a two-yard TD rush from QB Cade Sexauer.
The 'Dawgs moved the ball down the field on their opening drive as well, but a 49 yard field goal from
Luka Zurak was blocked and returned 66 yards for a Tommie TD. St. Thomas blocked a second field goal in the first half, this time from 43 yards, with just seconds left on the game clock.
BU made adjustments at the break and would get on the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a TD pass from
Bret Bushka to
Luke Wooten. Bushka sent the ball to the back pylon and Wooten made a great catch to get one foot down for the score. The 10-yard pass made the game 17-7.
BU added another TD in the fourth quarter with just six seconds left in the contest. Bushka once again found Wooten for a 5-yard TD pass.
Bushka ended the game with 123 passing yards and two touchdowns. He completed 13 of his 29 attempts, but was picked off twice. On the ground, Bushka added a team-high 62 rushing yards.
Joey Suchy also took nine handoffs for 34 yards.
Shawn Shipman led the Tommie ground attack with 99 rushing yards. Sexauer ended the game with two rushing TD's and 93 passing yards.
Defensively
Gabe Hicks and
Connor Reid chipped in for Butler with seven tackles apiece.
Austin Korba and
Jacob Cain shared a sack and Cain was also credited with a forced fumble.
Yusef Leak and Johnson Fallah each had interceptions for the St. Thomas defense. Leak was also responsible for the return TD early in the game off the blocked field goal. Tommy Shelstad and Trent Meyer had seven tackles each and Jonathan Bunce had a sack.
