Â
Bushka's First Team selection was no surprise to Bulldog fans after the standout QB claimed PFL Offensive Player of the Year honors yesterday. The redshirt-junior passed for 2,377 yards, the eighth most in a single-season in BU program history. To reach 2,377 yards, Bushka completed 205 passes and averaged 216 passing yards per game. He proved to be a dual threat throughout the 2022 campaign by also rushing for team-best 627 yards (57.0 ypg). Bushka accounted 3,004 yards of offense and 25 touchdowns.Â
Â
Bushka rushed for 102 yards at Davidson and passed for 338 yards vs. Dayton to set season-high totals in each statistical category. He added rushing touchdowns vs. Taylor, at South Dakota State, vs. Dayton, at Valparaiso and finally at home against Morehead State. His longest rush of the season covered 36 yards at Davidson.
Â
Bushka topped 300 passing yards two times this season. He opened the year with a bang by throwing for 309 yards and four touchdowns in a win over St. Thomas (Fla.). Bushka completed 25 passes that day and would tie that season-high total three more times vs. Dayton, San Diego and Drake. His longest pass of the year was a 75-yard TD to
Tyler Adams in the fourth quarter of the Dayton game. Due to his outstanding efforts vs. St. Thomas (Fla.) and Dayton, the BU QB earned PFL Offensive Player of the Week honors two times in 2022.
Â
Jared Suchevits and
Skyler Spetter were additional offensive selections to the All-PFL First Team for Butler. As a receiver, Suchevits caught 16 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 13 yards per reception and 19 yards per game. His first TD was a fourth quarter score at Valparaiso helping the Bulldogs come back to claim the Hoosier Helmet. The second was midway through the big win at home over Morehead State. Suchevits caught at least one pass in every game this season. His longest reception covered 55 yards vs. Marist.
Â
As a blocker, Suchevits would line up next to right tackle
Skyler Spetter to help protect Bushka and create a run game. Spetter was a staple of the Butler offensive line unit that led the PFL in sacks allowed and red zone offense. The 'Dawgs also led the PFL and ranked third in the FCS in tackles for loss allowed. For the season, Butler averaged 379 yards of total offense per game. They rushed for 161 and passed for 217. The Bulldogs averaged 5.6 yards per play to help them score 27 points per game. Spetter started in every game and got the nod on the First Team in 2022 after being on the Second Team as a sophomore and honorable mention as a freshman and junior.
Â
The fourth Bulldog to earn a spot on the All-PFL First Team did so in two different positions!
Luka Zurak, the 2022 PFL Special Teams Player of the Year, is a First Team selection as a place kicker and punter. Zurak was responsible for the longest punt in the PFL this season (67 yards at Davidson), and the longest field goal (56 yard at San Diego). His game-winning kick at San Diego was just one yard shy of the BU school record. Zurak's four field goal game in San Diego resulted in 14 points and helped the redshirt-junior earn the FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week award. A two-time PFL Special Teams Player of the Week honoree, Zurak was recognized first on Oct. 16 and again on Nov. 6. Zurak made 12 of his 15 field goal attempts and 36 of his 37 extra points to account for 72 points. He also kicked off 58 times for 3,455 yards and 17 touchbacks.
Â
Zurak punted the ball 38 times in 2022 to cover 1,576 yards. His 41.5 average led the league and he was able to pin the opponent inside the 20-yard line eight times. Zurak had seven punts travel 50+ yards. This is the second-straight year for Zurak to punt for 1,500+ yards.
Zurak is just the fourth player in PFL history to be First Team All-PFL as both a punter and a kicker. Tim Roth (San Diego) was the first in 1997. Ryan Feely and Dylan Lynch from Jacksonville also make the list (2005 - 2013).
Â
The Bulldogs had one offensive and defensive player selected to the All-PFL Second Team.
Luke Wooten got the call on the offensive side as a standout wide receiver. In his rookie season, Wooten led the PFL with 58 receptions. His best individual effort came at San Diego where he caught 14 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown. Wooten was just one reception shy of tying the BU school record that day, but his fourth quarter TD would tie the contest. Wooten had four touchdowns over his final three games and six total on the season. He also rushed the ball 12 times for 58 yards.
Â
The leader of the BU defense would make the All-PFL Second Team this year after being recognized as honorable mention in 2021.
Connor Reid led the team in tackles for the second-straight season. His 71 stops ranked him 18th in the PFL among all players and eighth among defensive backs. Reid made a season-high 14 tackles at Davidson and was credited with a half sack the following week vs. Dayton. He intercepted a pass vs. Marist and broke up two passes vs. Morehead State. Reid had at least four tackles in every PFL contest this season and would end his BU career with 177 total tackles.
Â
These players helped Butler post a 7-4 record during the 2022 campaign that included a 5-3 mark against conference foes. BU went 5-1 at the Sellick Bowl and would win five-straight games from Oct. 8 to Nov. 5.
