SCOUTING SAN DIEGO: The Toreros are 3-4 overall with three games left in the 2022 regular season. San Diego went 1-2 in non-conference action and were forced to cancel a game vs. Stetson due to Hurricane Ian (Oct.1). The Toreros lost at Valpo in their PFL opener and are fresh off a 49-42 loss at St. Thomas. Their two league wins this season came at Drake and vs. Presbyterian. QB Judd Erickson leads an offense that averages 30 points per game. The San Diego defense is led by graduate defensive end Muhindo Kapapa. Kapapa leads the PFL with six sacks and was recently added to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list.

San Diego hasn't had a losing season since 2010 when they went 5-6 overall (5-3 in PFL). From 2011-2021, the Toreros have posted the best conference winning percentage of any FCS team (78-8).

LAST MEETING: San Diego outscored Butler 38-7 in the second half to come up with a 52-21 victory. Butler led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and the two teams went into the half tied up 14-14. A blocked punt paired with two San Diego defensive touchdowns over the final 30 minutes would be the difference.

AJ Deinhart, Joey Suchy and Brody Reder combined for 121 rushing yards a year ago vs. SD. Reder scored two touchdowns in the setback.

ALL-TIME SERIES: San Diego leads the all-time series against Butler 21-5. Butler's last win over the Toreros came in 2009 (25-24). Their last win in California came back in 2001.

The first meeting between Butler and San Diego was in 1993 with the Toreros winning 28-27. Butler's first win in the series came the following year at home 38-21.

42 IN THE FIRST HALF: Butler scored a touchdown on six of their eight drives in the first half vs. Morehead State to score 42 points.

The Bulldogs had not scored 42 points in the first half against a PFL opponent since Nov. 9, 2013 when they posted 45 points against Valparaiso.

RUSHING ATTACK: The Bulldogs rushed for 290 yards last Saturday tying their season-best performance on the ground that was previously recorded Week 2 vs. Taylor. 10 different players took a hand-off vs. Morehead State allowing BU to rush for six touchdowns.

Butler averaged 6.6 yards per rush and 13.9 yards per pass vs. the Eagles to average 8.4 yards per play, their highest average of any game this season.

FIRST FOUR, LAST FOUR: The Bulldog defense only had four sacks over the first four games of the season, but have nine over their last four games. Four sacks against Morehead State last Saturday set a new season-high total and the Bulldogs added 10 tackles for loss vs. the Eagles.

Jacob Cain leads BU with three sacks. He is one of 12 on players on the roster with at least half a sack on the season.

PFL STANDINGS: The Bulldogs were picked 10th in the PFL Preseason Coaches' Poll, but find themselves tied for second in the conference standings with just three games left in the regular season. Butler rounds out their schedule at Drake and vs. St. Thomas. They are currently tied at 4-1 with Dayton and Davidson. BU beat Dayton 31-0, but lost to Davidson 31-0.

St. Thomas is ineligible for the NCAA Playoffs this year as they are still transitioning to Division I.

PUTTING UP POINTS: The Bulldogs are averaging 29 points per game this season their highest production since the 2013 campaign when they scored 33 per contest.

Since the 2013 season, San Diego has averaged 37.5 points per game in matchups vs. Butler. They have scored at least 27 points in each of the last eight meetings.

BUSHKA ADDED TO WATCH LIST: Bret Bushka is listed on the 2022 Walter Payton Award watch list, an honor that Stats Perform presents to the national offensive player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision.

Bushka leads the PFL with 14 passing touchdowns this season. He has thrown eight touchdowns over his last four starts with zero interceptions.
