@ButlerVB Falls at St. John’s Friday in Opening Match of East Coast Trip



St. John's was able to defend its home court Friday night, posting a 3-0 win over visiting Butler. The Red Storm won the match by a score of 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y.

With the result, Butler is now 12-13 and 6-7 in the BIG EAST; St. John's improves to 8-6 in conference play and 17-10 overall.

STAT OF THE MATCH: St. John's hit at least .333 in each of the three sets, registering an overall mark of .353 for the evening.
 
SET 1: St. John's 25-20
St. John's opened the set with a 5-1 spurt and led start to finish in the opening frame. Butler was able to claw within two on several occasions, including at 21-19. The Red Storm shut the door by winning four of the final five points. Lucrezia Lodi led St. John's with eight kills on 12 swings. Amina Shackelford and Mariah Grunze each had five kills for Butler in the opening set. The Bulldogs were aided by four blocks in the set.  

SET 2: St. John's 25-22
The second set featured 11 ties with the final one coming at 15-15. St. John's then won six straight points to take control of the set. Lodi once again led the Red Storm with seven kills. Shackelford's six kills paced the Bulldogs.

SET 3: St. John's 25-17
Butler was able to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and stay in the set. The Red Storm once again found a four-point advantage at 12-8 and then was able to create some distance from the visitors in taking the final set by a score of 25-17. Rachele Rastelli led St. John's with eight kills in the set. For the third straight frame, Shackelford led the Bulldogs in kills, this time with four.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • The two teams also played Oct. 16 at Hinkle Fieldhouse, with St. John's taking a 3-0 decision.
  • St. John's now has an 11-3 record at home so far this season.
  • Butler had a 10-6 advantage in blocks. Marisa Guisti was part of a team-high six blocks.
  • Shackelford led Butler with 15 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Mariah Grunze added 10 kills.
  • Libero Jaymeson Kinley finished with 13 digs. She entered the match leading the BIG EAST Conference and ranking 11th in the NCAA in digs per set (5.41).
  • Freshman setter Cora Taylor had 28 assists.
  • Lodi led three members of the Red Storm in double-figure kills with 17.
  • Wiktoria Kowalczyk had 43 assists for St. John's, leading the team to that .353 hitting percentage.
 
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs continue their East Coast road swing Saturday with a 6 p.m. first serve at Seton Hall. The Bulldogs are currently sixth in the BIG EAST standings, one game ahead of Seton Hall for the final spot in the six-team BIG EAST Tournament that will be contested later this month. Butler and Seton Hall previously met Oct. 14 at Hinkle Fieldhouse as the Bulldogs defended their home court by a score of 3-1.
