The Butler softball team is preparing for five contests this coming weekend at the Spring Games near Orlando, Fla. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play Ohio State, Hofstra, South Alabama, Monmouth (N.J.) and Bethune-Cookman. The team is coming off a 4-2 season-opening showing at the DePaul Dome Tournament last weekend.

Bulldog Bits

• Five Bulldogs with at least ten at bats this season are averaging .300 or better: Bri Avery (.438), Lauren Fey (.389), Teagan O'Rilley (.364), Ellie Boyer (.333), and Ella White (.316).
• Karli Ricketts is currently sixth for career home runs (19), and, from the circle, eighth for career strikeouts (339) and tied for fifth in career shutouts (7). Her 19 strikeouts this season ranks 31st nationally.
• Alyssa Graves is currently third all-time in career strikeouts (489), tied for fifth in career shutouts (7), ninth in career innings pitched (437.0), and tied for ninth in career wins (27).
• Bri Avery is five for six in stolen bases to open the season, ranking sixth nationally, while Ellie Boyer is three for three.
• The Bulldogs have started the season averaging 4.8 RBI/game as compared to 2.8 RBI/game in 2021.
• Butler dinged three home runs in its first six games of the 2022 season. In 2021, the team also averaged one home run per two games, launching 20 long balls over 39 games.

SCOUTING OHIO STATE- Big Ten  (series record: Ohio State leads, 4-0)
The Buckeyes are 3-0 in 2022 with wins over Northern Illinois, Louisville, and Bethune-Cookman.
 
SCOUTING HOFSTRA- Colonial Athletic  (series record: Butler leads, 1-0)
The Pride ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 16-16, going 6-8 in Colonial Athletic Conference action. Top returning players include senior RHP Madison Burns (6-12) and graduate student Devyn Losco, who batted .364.
 
SCOUTING SOUTH ALABAMA- Sun Belt  (series record: South Alabama leads, 4-0)
The Jaguars are 1-3 this season with losses to LSU and Illinois. Leading batters include Caroline Nichols (.500), Mackenzie Brasher (.300) and Victoria Ortiz (.300). Jenna Hardy (2.15 ERA, 8 K) has pitched 13.0 innings.
 
SCOUTING MONMOUTH (N.J.)- Metro Atlantic  (series record: Butler leads, 4-1)
The Hawks went 25-9 last season, playing only Metro Atlantic games. Top returning players include Julia Thuer, who batted .317 last season, and junior pitcher Kylie Gletow, who went 10-4 with a 4.05 ERA.
 
SCOUTING BETHUNE-COOKMAN- Mid-Eastern Athletic  (series record: tied, 1-1)
The Wildcats are 1-3 in 2022 with a win over Northern Illinois and losses to Louisville, Ohio State, and Indiana. Leading hitters are Haley Parks (.875) and Joslynn Davis (.658). Hannah Ortega (1-1) has pitched 14.0 innings with a 1.50 ERA and five strikeouts.
