WEST LAFAYETTE – Butler designated hitter
Aaron Steinhart hit a grand slam at Alexander Field on Tuesday night to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead in the third inning, but the Boilers would come back and score seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim an 11-6 win over the Bulldogs.
Garret Gray came up with the first hit of the game for Butler in the top of the third inning with a single through the left side of the infield. That at-bat would spark the offense as
Travis Holt delivered a two-out single to extend the frame and
Scott Jones would load the bases with his first hit of the night.
Steinhart took full advantage of the situation and sent a ball over the wall in leftfield for a go-ahead grand slam. The homer on a 1-1 count was Steinhart's eighth of the year and gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
Gray would gift Butler another scoring sequence in the fourth inning. He doubled down the right field line to score
Ryan O'Halloran. Moments later, the BU first baseman would score to make the game 6-3 on a ground out from
Billy Wurch.
The Bulldogs kept the Boilers off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings, but the sixth told the story on Tuesday night. Purdue scored seven runs off four hits, with the most damage coming from Valdez's double to left.
John MacCauley would take the loss in this one while the win went to Ricky Castro. BU started
Dawson Taylor and would use four additional arms after MacCauley left in the sixth.
Steinhart clearly had the biggest impact on the game for the Bulldogs, but Holt and Gray were also impressive with multi-hit games. Both Gray and Holt had a double in the setback.
The Bulldogs will remain on the road this weekend with a three-game series at Creighton.
