OKLAHOMA CITY – Butler softball alum Karen Woldahl will throw out the ceremonial first pitch in the first game of the Women's College World Series (WCWS) Finals on Wednesday, June 8. The festivities are part of the WCWS "Strike Out Cancer" Night and will be broadcast on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
Woldahl has been a 20-year volunteer for the American Cancer Society (ACS). Throughout the years, her Relay for Life team from Nucor Steel has raised $5 million to support the mission of the ACS. The Decatur, Alabama, resident has spearheaded year-round fundraising events for her team including a golf tournament, fishing tournament, "Cycle the South" bike ride, raffles, and more, raising over $450,000 this year alone. Woldahl dedicates her time and passion in memory of her mother who lost her battle with cancer in 2009.
When asked about her trip to the WCWS, Woldahl stated "(It's special) because I am joined by my college softball coach, Barb Greenburg, and two former teammates, Jeanne Rayman (Stephens) and Sara Reed (Vine)."
A four-year starting catcher for Butler, Woldahl earned all-conference honors in both 1988 and 1990. She graduated in 1990 with a degree in Computer Information Systems and currently works as a Process Analyst at Nucor.
