INDIANAPOLIS -- The Bulldogs dropped the opening match of the 2022 Bulldog Brawl with a 3-0 loss to visiting Ohio (18-25, 24-26, 20-25). Butler moves to 6-4 on the year while the Bobcats improve to 6-3.
SET 1: Ohio 25-18
Ohio broke an early 4-4 tie in the first set and never looked back on their way to claiming a seven-point win. The Bulldogs got back within one at 13-12, but were not able to grab the lead. Ohio hit .385, recording 18 kills on 39 attempts with just three errors. Butler's offense also played well by posting a .317 attack percentage with just one error on 41 swings.
Mariah Grunze led the charge with five kills for BU. Kristy Frank matched that effort with five for the Bobcats.
SET 2: Ohio 26-24
Butler erased a five-point deficit at 18-13 to tie the action at 20-20 after a block from
Marisa Guisti and
Cora Taylor. Action stayed tight the rest of the way, but Lauren Park would push the Bobcats in front 25-24 with a kill and a BU error would eliminate the comeback chance pushing Ohio up 2-0. Grunze and Frank each led their respective team in the kill category. Grunze had a match-high 11 before the break and Frank was close behind with 10.
SET 3: Ohio 25-20
There were no lead changes in the final set as Ohio kept their foot on the gas to complete the three-set sweep. Caitlin O'Farrell was great down the stretch with a team-best five kills. Frank added four along with teammate Lauren Park. Ohio hit .204 in the third set comparted to just .077 for BU.
