@ButlerUWSoccer Picks Up BIG EAST Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Butler women's soccer team secured its first BIG EAST win of the season on Thursday, defeating Providence by the score of 2-1. The Bulldogs (4-6-1, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) scored one first-half goal and added another in the middle of the second before finally conceding one to the Friars (3-6-1, 1-1-0) on a corner kick late in the match.

Key Moments
  • 17' | Abigail Isger carries down the left side and sends a long cross to the front of the goal. Among several charging Bulldogs, Amelie Darey leaps and heads the ball just past the Providence keeper into the right side of the net. Dawgs take the early, 1-0, lead.
    --HALFTIME--
  • 63' | Katie Soderstrom carries toward the middle of the field and hits a hard, left-footed shot toward the far post. The shot deflects off a Providence defender and gives the Bulldogs a corner opportunity.
  • 67' | A pass between Friars defenders at midfield is stolen by Talia Sommer. Sommer breaks away and takes on the Providence keeper, one-on-one. She slides a shot just to the left of the sliding goalie and gives Butler a 2-0 lead.
  • 87' | Providence earns a corner kick. The service is punched in the air by Butler keeper Anna Pierce, bounces around off a couple of Friars, and is finally punched into the net by Avery Snead. Butler's lead is cut to 2-1.
  • 89' | The Friars earn two consecutive corner kicks. The second is cleared away, and Soderstrom sprints to send it toward the Providence goal. She is fouled, ending the Friars' threat.
  • 90' | Providence has one last chance with a free kick from 50 yards out. The service is blocked by Alexei Whittaker, and Butler is able to run out the clock.
