ButlerVB Delivers a Reverse Sweep Over DePaul 3-2

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team survived a nail-biter in a five-set victory over DePaul (20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14). After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs fought back, winning the next three sets to move to 4-6 in conference and 10-11 overall. 
 
Set 1: DePaul 25-20
The Blue Demons jumped ahead to open the match at a 4-1 lead. Butler would fight back using kills from Mariah Grunze and Grace Boggess to bring the score to 9-7. Consecutive 3-0 runs by DePaul would then lengthen their lead to 17-10. The Bulldogs would rally late with kills from Grunze and Elise Ward to shorten the gap to 23-20, but the Blue Demons would score the next two points to close out the first set 25-20. Boggess led the set with five kills while Jaymeson Kinley snagged seven digs. 

Set 2: DePaul 25-17
Butler would begin with the momentum in the second set taking a 7-4 lead using kills from Boggess and Destiny Cherry. DePaul then scored six straight points to flip the score in their favor at 10-7. A kill by Laiya Ebo brought the score to 12-10, but Blue Demons would then start running away with the set reaching 20-13. The Bulldogs could not contest, leading to DePaul taking the second set 25-17. 
 
Set 3: Butler 25-22
Kills from Boggess and Rylie Tam gave Butler an early 3-2 lead, but DePaul would then fight back to take an 8-6 lead. Ward then gave the Bulldogs a boost with a kill and a block to regain the lead at 10-8. The two teams then remained deadlocked until a 3-0 spurt gave Butler a 19-14 lead. The Blue Demons stormed back with five straight points to tie the set at 19-19. The Bulldogs then woke up going on a 3-0 run to claim the set 25-22. 

Set 4: Butler 25-22
The Bulldogs picked up where they left off flying out to a 8-3 lead that included four team blocks highlighted by Boggess and back-to-back serving aces by Reese Bates. DePaul then started creeping back to make the score 10-8 before then going on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 14-11. Butler responded with a 3-0 spurt using consecutive kills by Grunze to tie the match 17-17. A kill and block by Ward helped the Bulldogs regain the lead at 20-19 followed by a 4-0 run topped off by a Kaylee Finnegan serving ace to make the score 24-21. Cora Taylor then put the set to bed with a kill to tie the match at two sets apiece. 

Set 5: Butler 16-14
After giving up the first three points, Grunze's kills led a 3-0 run for the Bulldogs to make the score 3-3. Another serving ace by Bates gave Butler a 6-4, but the Blue Demons would bring the score equal at 7-7. The Bulldogs then went on a 4-0 spurt using kills from Ward and a solo block from Cherry to take an 11-7 lead. DePaul wasn't ready to give up, crawling back and eventually stealing back the lead at 14-13. With the all fans on their feet inside Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs rallied for the next three points capped off by a game-winning kill from Boggess to secure the reverse sweep.

Stat of the Match
After hitting for .070 percent as a team in the first two sets, the Bulldogs flipped the script finishing with a .250 hitting percentage over the last three sets to beat the Blue Demons. Today's match was Butler's first reverse sweep since Nov. 2019 when the Bulldogs won the last three sets to sink Seton Hall 3-2. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Taylor led the match with 50 assists and 17 digs to earn her seventh double-double of the season
  • Kinley collected a team-high 26 digs along with five assists
  • Ward earned her fifth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 17 digs
  • Grunze amassed 16 kills, eight digs, and two blocks
  • Boggess hit for a match-high .321 with 12 kills and six blocks
  • Ebo posted 10 kills and four digs in the match
  • Bates tallied nine digs and a new career-high four serving aces

The Bulldogs will head back out east for the final time this season next week to face Seton Hall on Friday, October 27 at 6 p.m. and St. John's on Saturday, October 28 at 5 p.m.
