ButlerVB Take Care of UConn at Home 3-0

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team swept UConn at Hinkle (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) to end their four-match losing streak. Abby Maesch's 17 kills helped power the Bulldogs to their fifth conference win of the season and move to an overall record of 11-15.
 
Set 1: Butler 25-21
UConn began the match on top with a 4-0 run to take an early 6-3 lead. Consecutive kills from Abby Maesch helped the Bulldogs crawl back into the game to tie the score at 7-7. A 3-0 spurt on the backs of kills from Elise Ward and Cora Taylor to take over the lead at 14-12. Butler then used kills from Maesch and Ward to go on a 4-0 run extend their lead to 23-19 and eventually close out the first set 25-21. 

Set 2: Butler 25-23
The second set was a similar story as the Huskies used a 3-0 run followed by a 4-0 spurt to fly out to a 9-3 lead. Butler would then use kills from Maesch to first cut the lead to 10-7 and a block and kill from Grace Boggess to shorten the lead to 12-11. The Bulldogs would take their first lead of the set at 16-15 after a serving ace by Taylor and would not look back. UConn brought the score back to 23-22, but a kill by Ward and an attacking error by the Huskies gave Butler the win in Set 2.
 
Set 3: Butler 25-21
The Bulldogs started on top in the third frame after kills from Taylor and Mariah Grunze gave them a 2-0 lead. UConn would respond with a 3-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. Butler would soon regain the lead at 13-10 on a 4-0 run highlighted by a solo block from Taylor. The Bulldogs went on another 4-0 spurt to extend their lead to 21-15 after Maesch collected two kills and a block. The Huskies would fight back to cut the deficit to two points at 23-21, but Cherry stepped up and put the Huskies to bed with a solo block to win the match.

Stat of the Match
The Bulldogs looked spectacular on offense hitting for a season-high .344 percentage. Abby Maesch fueled the offense hitting for a career-high .417 while leading the match with 17 kills and 18.0 points. Cora Taylor also earned two major accolades in today's match, including 2,000 career total assists and 1,000 total assists this season.

Inside the Box Score
  • Taylor padded the stat sheet by collecting 34 assists (11.33 per set), seven digs, and two blocks
  • Jaymeson Kinley led the team with 21 digs (7.00 per set) while adding eight assists
  • Maesch led the match with 17 kills while setting a new career high with a .417 hitting percentage
  • Ward posted 15 kills and five digs in the match
  • Boggess hit for a team-high .429 with seven kills and three blocks
Up Next 
The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow for the final match in Hinkle Fieldhouse of the season against Providence. The Senior Day recognition will start just before the match while the first serve is slated for noon.
